FAQ / PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

Food waste equipment FAQ for planning and operation

Use this food waste equipment FAQ to review accepted materials, operating routines, output handling and common troubleshooting questions.

Requirements vary by model. Always follow the manual supplied with your Wawli system and applicable local regulations.

Choosing and operating a system

Inputs, daily routines, process behaviour and safe operation.

What materials can go into a Wawli composter?

Food that people can eat, whether raw or cooked, can generally be processed. Always check the accepted-material list for your specific Wawli model.

How do I choose the right food waste composter capacity?

Record at least one representative week of average and peak food-waste weights, loading hours, moisture, feedstock, pretreatment and output or curing space. Size the model around real peak demand without unnecessary oversizing, and confirm the operating window for the selected system.

Can meat and dairy products be processed?

Some Wawli models may accept meat and dairy. Check the accepted-material list and the required hygiene procedure for the specific model and feedstock. A processing or hygienization cycle alone does not establish compost maturity or suitability for soil use; follow the operating guide and local requirements.

Can seafood shells be added?

Check the accepted-material list for your model before adding seafood shells. Soft shrimp or prawn shells may be permitted; do not add hard lobster, crab, mussel or clam shells unless the operating guide explicitly allows them.

Can certified compostable products be added?

Compostability certification does not by itself confirm compatibility with a Wawli machine. Only add products explicitly accepted for the selected model and the intended downstream treatment route. Confirm the permitted proportion and processing time in the operating guide; do not apply one percentage or processing time to every model.

How often should food waste be added?

Follow the loading schedule for the selected model. Confirm whether it is batch-operated or allows additional loading during operation, along with per-load and daily limits. Do not assume that every system uses one load per day or the same 24-hour interval.

Does the microbial culture need to be replenished?

Replenishment requirements depend on the microbial model, the culture used and operating conditions. Follow the maintenance schedule supplied with the machine and confirm the appropriate product and interval with Wawli. A yearly interval should not be assumed for every system.

What ventilation, deodorization, condensate or drainage connections does each Wawli model require?

Requirements differ among drying, microbial composting, dewatering and large systems. Confirm extraction, carbon, UV or scrubbing equipment, condensate, wastewater, drainage and local permits for the specific model and site. Do not assume that every system has the same connection or discharge profile.

How does a food waste composter control odour?

Enclosure, adequate oxygen, correct moisture and porosity, controlled loading and maintained filtration or deodorization work together to manage odour. Poor feedstock balance, excess moisture, inadequate airflow or blocked filters can still create odour, so follow the operating and maintenance guidance for the model.

How are Wawli composters different from food waste dehydrators?

Food waste dehydrators remove water and produce dried food residue. Wawli microbial models process suitable food waste and produce processed organic material. Drainage and ventilation requirements differ by model. The intended use of the output depends on its condition, any further curing or testing, and local requirements.

What must not be put into the machine?

Do not add non-organic materials such as plastic, glass or metal. These items may damage the machine or cause a malfunction.

Can bones be processed?

Only add bones that are explicitly permitted in the accepted-material list for your model, within its size and loading limits. Do not assume that every machine accepts chicken or fish bones. Keep large, hard bones out unless the operating guide specifically allows them.

Can yard trimmings be added?

Add grass or leaves only if they are explicitly accepted for the selected model. Do not add plant roots, which may wrap around the shaft or blades. Follow the model-specific material and loading limits.

What should I do if plastic is added by mistake?

Remove the plastic as soon as it is safe to do so. Heat can deform plastic and may contaminate the processed material, so strict separation of accepted and non-accepted materials is recommended.

How often should the machine be emptied?

At full operating capacity, some microbial models may need output removed about once a week. The actual interval depends on the model, loading and operating guide. The removed material is processed organic output; confirm whether further curing or testing is needed before its intended use.

Are the microbes harmful to people or animals?

Use only the microbial preparation specified for the selected Wawli model and follow its safety and handling instructions. Operating temperature and oxygen requirements alone do not establish that a preparation is harmless. Follow the operating guide for loading, cleaning, maintenance and contact with processed material.

What does a 12-24-hour microbial processing window actually mean?

It is an equipment-processing reference for suitable feedstock under controlled conditions, not a promise that every load becomes mature compost. Feedstock, particle size, moisture, loading and operating conditions affect the result, and the output may still require curing or testing for its intended use.

Can compost be used if the hygienization cycle was not run?

Do not assume the processed output is suitable for soil use if a required hygienization cycle was not run. Follow the procedure for the specific model and feedstock, and check local requirements. Further curing, testing or other handling may also be needed before the intended use.

Output and troubleshooting

Processed output, moisture balance and routine correction.

Is machine output mature compost, and does it need curing or testing before use?

Rapidly processed output should not automatically be called mature compost. Use the process type, output stability, hygienization records, curing, testing, intended use and local requirements to decide whether the material should be blended with soil, cured further or handled through another organics route.

What should I do if the processed material is too dry?

For microbial models, check the moisture requirements and adjust the loading or add water only as directed by the operating guide. Do not apply microbial-process moisture adjustments to a food waste dryer.

What should I do if the processed material contains too much oil?

Review the grease content and loading mix against the limits for your model. Do not add paper or other absorbent material unless the operating guide explicitly permits it. Follow the recommended adjustment procedure or contact Wawli for support.

What should I do if the processed material is too wet?

Check the feedstock, free liquid and loading conditions against the operating guide. Only use paper or other absorbent material if it is approved for the selected model. Confirm the appropriate adjustment or dewatering procedure with Wawli.

How much processed output does the machine produce?

The amount of processed output varies with the feedstock, its moisture content, loading and operating conditions. For planning, measure input and output for the selected model under representative conditions. An output quantity does not establish compost maturity or fertilizer quality.

Feedstock preparation and pretreatment

Sorting, size reduction and upstream preparation before processing.

What pretreatment may be required before loading a food waste composting machine?

Use source-separated food waste and approved biodegradable material. Remove plastic, glass, metal and other contaminants, drain excessive free liquid, and complete any required shredding, dewatering or separation before material enters the processing line. Exact pretreatment depends on the model and feedstock.

What does an integrated shredder change in a commercial composter?

An integrated shredder reduces suitable feed material before microbial processing, bringing two steps into one machine. It does not replace the need to sort out plastic, glass, metal and other unsuitable objects before loading.

When do larger food-waste projects need shredding, dewatering or oil-water separation?

Select shredding, dewatering, oil-water separation, conveying and deodorization from feedstock moisture, grease, contamination, particle size, peak load and site emission requirements.

Installation and model-specific planning

Operating mode, load profile, utilities and output routes.

Is a Wawli commercial composter batch-operated or continuously fed?

Do not assume that every commercial composter can be continuously fed. Use the model operating guide to confirm the permitted loading rhythm, per-load and daily limits, hatch-opening restrictions, offloading and any retained base-material requirements.

Can a Wawli composter operate below its rated daily capacity?

Rated capacity is not a requirement to fill every cycle. Assess actual minimum and typical loads, feed frequency and the operating guide. Unrestricted low-load operation should not be assumed without model guidance.

What should be confirmed before routine use of a food waste dryer?

Confirm utilities, ventilation, safe loading and unloading space, cleaning access and the intended route for the dried residue. Operation and maintenance should follow the guide supplied with the machine.

What site services and output routes are needed for a kitchen waste reduction machine?

Confirm electrical supply, water and drainage requirements, ventilation, operator access, cleaning space and collection routes for separated solids, liquid and oil with Wawli before installation.
